This was a really lovely walk on the Cheshire/Staffordshire border with woodland, open countryside with some great views and the spectacular chasm of Lud’s Church to add variety.

The what3words address takes you to a possible roadside parking place between the Wincle brewery and the bridge. Parking  is limited but it is possible to park safely here. There  is also a small car park just north-east of Gradbach, and you could complete the walk from here, but this gets extremely busy (///oils.ambushes.spillage)

We walked this route clockwise, turning left off the road just after crossing the river and then following the river on the Dane Valley Way until you turn away from it along the Black Brook. After following this for a little while we  looped back and descended into Lud’s Church at the southern end. There are steps leading into the chasm here.

The Wincle brewery has a beer garden and small shop selling some of their draft beers as well as their bottled offerings; very welcome at the end of a walk on a very hot day!
