A short walk along the cliffs at Eshaness from the lighthouse, where there is a small car park.
This is a popular walk and it’s popular for a reason; the landscape is spectacular. We were lucky to have chosen an (almost) wind-free day with blue skies at the beginning of autumn and the views were simply stunning.
The route is easy to follow along the cliffs (don’t get too close to the edge if it’s windy!) We stopped at the Head of Stanshi and sat for a while watching the birds and an inquisitive seal that was enjoying the surf. You could continue on further, perhaps to The Burr or beyond, but we turned back.
On the return we turned inland from the cliffs and passed alongside the Holes of Scrada. This is a partially collapsed sea cave that penetrates 150 metres inland. Very dramatic.
From here we turned south along the side of the Loch of Houlland, passing the remains of a broch (not much to see)and a line of stepping stones that lead onto a low island in the loch: we were tempted…
The track then continues south-south-west until it reaches the cliffs and the lighthouse car park.
A lovely walk and a must if you have a couple of hours to spare and good visibility, though it would be a memorable walk in any weather.
