We parked at the Abbey (£7 for 6 hours or £9 for 12 hours at the time of writing) and walked down into the town where we caught a train to Grosmont and then walked back. The trains aren’t frequent but they take you to several stations along the Esk Valley and so it’s very straightforward to make this walk longer (or shorter!) as you wish. The Esk Valley Walk is well signposted once you have got onto it. If you don’t want to park at the Abbey there are alternative car parks (for example, opposite the station at ///jetliner.ballots.tasks).

This was a lovely walk with plenty of variety: open fields, great views, woodland – and steam trains! Several sections were quite boggy; good boots are recommended.
