The free car park is opposite Meal beach and there are public toilets here – although they are not necessarily open all year.

Cross the road from the car park and a signposted track leads down to the southern end of the beach. At the far end of the beach a track leads up to the coast path – it’s semi-hidden behind the rocks.  We followed the track around the headlands of Biargar and Pundsar to the lighthouse at Fugla Ness. Great sea views.

The track to Fugla is across an uneven, rocky ’causeway’ and some care is needed, but the rock provides good traction. From the lighthouse we returned along the same path and then turned east along the bay to Hamnavoe itself. From here we followed the road back to the car park.

This isn’t a long walk but it’s a very satisfying one with fabulous views.
